National Cyber High
Schools
The list of online schools below are
nationwide. Most of them supply curriculum to state or private
K-12 cyber charter schools or online high schools. If you are
going to use these independent of a state funded program (you are
paying out of your pocket) you should ask the schools to talk to a
client. Online curriculum can be expensive and some are great and
some are not so great. That means that they haven't yet developed
the interactive curriculum as extensively as they
should.
Our first experience when my child was in middle
school was with Class.com and we loved it. It was very
interactive, fun to watch and we both learned a lot. Later in
High School she took a drivers education course from another
provider and we weren't pleased with it at all. Essentially I had
to read the book to her and she took tests online. The online
component hadn't been developed nearly enough for teenagers ANXIOUS
to take drivers ed.
Some of the courses below are connected to
colleges and universities. The MU High School is from the
University of Missouri, a leader and catalyst of this distance
learning explosion. Their courses are excellent, however
their tests need to be proctored, meaning you will have to go to a
testing station or someone qualified to give your child the
test. MU High School will help you with that but it's still
something to consider as you choose a school. Lastly, I think
if you were paying for this out of your pocket you could pick and
choose a course here and a course there from different
schools. The state funded cyber schools do that meaning the
curriculum directors also understand weaknesses in some programs
and strengths in others. If you are going the state funded
online or cyber high school direction, be proactive and ASK your
counselor why one cyber program was chosen over
another.
