CyberLearning, a non-profit project of the National Education Foundation, has joined in partnership with Technology Training Solution provider, InfoSource Learning, to bridge the digital divide.
Winter Park, FL (PRWEB) October 12, 2006 -- InfoSource Learning today announced a strategic partnership with CyberLearning aimed at providing effective and affordable digital education, globally. Two CyberLearning projects that are set to launch this year will help increase digital literacy in India and in Mauritius, the island nation, between India and Africa in the Indian Ocean. InfoSource is honored to support these projects by supplying its award-winning Digital Literacy courseware library and Learning Management System for this effort.
Dr. Appu Kattan, founder and chairman of the National Education Foundation CyberLearning, and co-author of the book From Digital Divide to Digital Opportunity (Scarecrow PR, 2003), leads the two projects with InfoSource. The first, appropriately named the “Million ICT” project, aspires to train one million Indians, especially the poor rural and urban citizens of India, in ICT (Information and Communication Technology). India, which has one of the world’s widest divides, of its one billion people, 75% are technologically illiterate. CyberLearning will utilize InfoSource’s Digital Literacy online courseware, CD ROMs, and books to train at least one person in every village. The Digital Literacy training content is a combination of Microsoft Office Specialist approved courseware and the Certiport approved Internet and Core Computing Certification (IC3) Library.
Dr. Kuttan is also the catalyst for developing the digital literacy initiative that aims to transform the island nation of Mauritius into a service economy and strategic partner with India. Located off the eastern coast of Africa, Mauritius seeks to become an economic bridge between the emerging information technology power and the African continent. The Mauritius initiative will launch Sept. 4, making the achievement of the world's premier digital literacy credential, IC³, a mandatory requirement for high school graduation. The goal is to train and certify 400,000 students in IC³ over the next four years.
“Digital literacy drives technology, and technology is driving the knowledge-based economy,” states Dr. Kuttan. The people of Mauritius, which has an economy based on tourism and sugar cane, will learn to use technology to participate in the economy. The tiny country represents a global phenomenon—smaller nations leapfrogging bigger ones entrapping the digital economy. “Mauritius is getting a jump on other countries in that area,” Dr. Kuttan adds. Developing a holistic approach to bridging the divide simply begins by marrying a country's needs with its native resources.
InfoSource and CyberLearning share the common mission and passion of providing digital education to thousands of disadvantaged all over the world. These projects intend create a significant pool of digitally educated professionals with internationally-recognized ICT certification, which in turn, will attract employers, thus impacting economic development.
