California has a wide variety of online schools, charter school combinations and virtual classrooms. Each school has a list of the counties they serve along with a brief description. It's always important to contact the individual charter school to see if your student can enroll with them. Also remember these charter schools are growing slowly. Some are K-8, K-11 or 9-12 and some have waiting lists:

Who is eligible for the California Virtual Academies? Each California Virtual Academy is an autonomous school authorized by the district hosting it that can enroll students living in the school's home county or adjoining counties. For example, if you live in Los Angeles County, your child is eligible to enroll in our charter partner based in Kern County. See below to find the school that serves your county.

Choice 2000 is available to students in five Southern California counties: Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial and Orange. Choice 2000 Online High School is the first public 7th-12th grade school to be both fully online and WASC accredited. Choice 2000 is proud to offer students in California cutting edge technologies to complete their high school coursework entirely over the internet. This includes a live online virtual classroom environment, the ability to receive and turn in homework assignments online as well as a secure online assessment environment. All classes are held in real-time from your computer at home and take place throughout the day with different periods in the same way as a traditional high school. Thus, it is not a self-paced learning environment. Choice 2000 also is based on a two semester model and so we are not a credit recovery program.
Horizon Charter School http://www.hcs.k12.ca.us/ Horizon Charter School is a fully accredited and tuition free public school providing quality education to K-12 students by building upon the unique, individual strengths of each student. The following California counties are currently served by HCS. El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yuba. Each student has access to a comprehensive, broad array of learning choices and educational pathways. Horizon provides the following parent-driven educational opportunities in partnership with highly qualified, credentialed Supervising Teachers: Home-Based Education -Math, Science, and Engineering Academy, Independent Study,Montessori School.
Hickman Community Charter School http://www.hickman.k12.ca.us/bresource.html Hickman Charter School is a “university model” which blends homeschooling with on-site classes and online programs. Hickman is located in Stanislaus County east of Modesto. California charter law allows charter schools to serve non-classroom students in their own and adjacent counties. In order to better serve students and families in Alameda County Hickman opened a resource center in Berkeley in 1997.
SIERRA Charter School http://www.sierracharter.org/home.html The school provides a trained facilitator who will monitor, assist, guide and counsel you and your students. We give you the support, information and resources needed to make independent study easier. Though parents must supervise and accept responsibility for the educational process of their students, with professional guidance offered by SIERRA Charter School, that task is much simpler. The free support and resources provided by our school will enhance your existing programs. We also offer free in-home computers with modems and Internet access. Programs are available for all students, from remedial to accelerated. K-12 charter school serving students within the counties of Alpine, Mono, Madera, Fresno, Inyo, and Tuolumne.
New Jerusalem Charter School http://www.njcharter.com/ A K-8 charter school in Tracy, California. It is located in San Joaquin County and serves students from Sacramento, Amador, Calaveras, Stanislaus, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties. Our school offers students and their families an alternative to traditional classroom instruction. Teaching is conducted primarily at home by parents or other responsible adults. As a support to this home instruction, our school also has programs taught on-site in technology, science, economics, geography, music, literature, drama, poetry, creative writing, history, crafts, foreign language, and visual arts. Students participate in hands-on workshops and research projects as well as benefit from interactions with district-sponsored activities such as assemblies, field trips, GATE program, after school sports, and an after school hands on science program. Charter educational coordinators (credentialed teachers) assist home educators in the development of their children’s individual learning plans and provide guidance, materials, and other curricular support.
Mountain Oaks School - http://www.mountainoaks.org/ A K-12 charter school for home schooling families sponsored by the Calaveras County Board of Education. The main resource center is located in San Andreas in Calaveras County. There are two satellite centers, one in Pine Grove in Amador County and the other in Sonora in Tuolumne County. The present year enrollment is approximately 375 students. Our students have an approximate distribution of 1/3 elementary students, 1/3 middle school aged students, and 1/3 high school students.
